The Summer Nationals always makes some special moments each year. One of the places that has made some moments in the past is Spoon River Speedway. It was not different in 2020. Competing much later than normal due to Hell Tour being delayed a few weeks Spoon River did not host their Summer Nationals event until July16th.
Brian Shirley has been the one to beat on the Summer Nationals tour over the past few seasons and this night at Spoon River was no different. Leading most of the race it looked like Shirley would pick up his first win on the 2020 Hell Tour. But in stepped someone we do not usually think about when it comes to Spoon River. Kent Robinson, driver from Bloomington, IN, likes to drop in central Illinois to race from time to time. In 2019 Kent won the $10,000 to win Farmer City 74 with the Mars Racing Series.
In the closing laps at Spoon River Robinson seemed to be closing in on the 3S of Shirley. On the final lap Kent drove in deep on the inside and got side by side with Shirley. The two even made contact as they came off turn two as Robinson slid into the lead. In the final corner Kent held off Shirley to pick up the win in one of the more exciting finishes on this past year’s Hell Tour.
