June (By Tyson Graves)
By June Jimmy Owens had established himself as the driver you were going to have to beat to win the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series title. Not only getting it done on the national tour but really, everywhere he went he could win or be a serious threat to win.
In mid-June the Lucas tour rolled into the Magnolia Motor Speedway for the annual “Clash at the Mag” event. On night one it was Oakwood, IL driver Bobby Pierce who would take home the preliminary win. Pierce would take the lead from pole sitter Owens on the opening lap and lead all twenty-five laps for the $5,000 win. Night two was no different as Jimmy would start the race from the pole and take the early race lead. Owens would fend off Josh Richards for the win.
It was more of the same story in the 100-lap finale on Saturday night. Owens once again grabbing the pole position. Jimmy took the early race lead and looked to be cruising. Around the 15-lap in mark Jimmy would drop back to third. Just a few laps later Owens regain the lead for good. He would lead the remaining laps and hold off runner-up Shane Clanton.
