May (By Tyson Graves)
After the COVID-19 pandemic had started to subside a little the national touring series had to get creative to get cars back on the track. The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series came up with a plan called the “Reopen Tour.” This would be a similar repeat of the Florida/Georgia Speedweeks with a couple of races at Golden Isles and then a return to East Bay Raceway Park for several nights of racing.
On May 19th, the Lucas Oil tour rolled into Golden Isles to get things back underway. It was the O-Show of Jimmy Owens who took the opening night win. Jimmy came in riding a hot streak of unsanctioned wins heading back on the Lucas Oil grind. Josh Richards would pick up the second night win.
A few days later series invaded East Bay for the second time in 2020 for three nights of action. Three-time series champion Jonathan Davenport won the opening night of event. East Bay has been pretty good to Davenport over the past few years with several wins. But it was the hot driver Brandon Overton in the Wells Motorsports machine that stole the show. After showing speed on night one but retiring with a vibration in the 76 machine Brandon bounced back on the final two nights.
Brandon would win the final two nights and started to make the case that he might be one the best drivers in the country in 2020. But the racing action was off the charts and was exciting for everyone tuning in to watch the fan-less event. As always East Bay produced racing that we could not deny as one the top moments of the 2020 season.
